Jeong Hoon Lee is a faculty member in the KU-KIST Graduate School of Converging Science and Technology and the Department of Integrative Energy Engineering at Korea University, South Korea. He earned his B.S. in Advanced Materials Engineering (Ceramic Engineering) from Yonsei University in 1997 and subsequently obtained his Ph.D. from the same institution in 2004. His doctoral and postdoctoral research focused on MEMS (BioMEMS) and Nanomechanics at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) from 1999 to 2005. Following a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at KIST, he continued his research as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, from 2005 to 2008. He has been a faculty member at Kwangwoon University since September 2008. In March 2025, he joined Korea University as a faculty member in the KU-KIST Graduate School of Converging Science and Technology and the Department of Integrative Energy Engineering, College of Engineering, where he continues his interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence and biomedical diagnostics. He co-founded CALTH Inc. in 2018 and has been serving as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) since 2023.
Professor Lee's research converges nano-bio sample preparation, microfluidic engineering, and advanced artificial intelligence to pioneer next-generation point-of-care testing (POCT) and laboratory automation. His lab is driving a paradigm shift in rapid diagnostics by manipulating surface fluidics and capillary wicking dynamics to overcome traditional limits of detection. Integrating proprietary sample-preparation platforms like BEETLES² and SaliFilter with novel deep learning algorithms such as SMARTAI-LFA and TIMESAVER, his research enables ultra-sensitive, expert-level smartphone diagnostics within minutes—even from non-invasive samples like saliva. Beyond conventional CNN models, his research leverages cutting-edge deep learning architectures—including Vision Transformers (ViT), Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), Multi-modal AI, and Generative Models—to power Physical AI for the autonomous control of advanced analytical instrumentation (e.g., AFM, Raman spectroscopy) and Physiological AI for digital aging, bio-signal processing, and skin analysis. His lab also applies AI to microphysiological systems (MPS) and organoid platforms to accelerate disease modeling and personalized precision medicine.
In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to bio-healthcare diagnostics, Professor Lee was selected for the "Top 100 Outstanding National R&D Achievements of 2024" by the Ministry of Science and ICT and was awarded the Prime Minister’s Commendation at the 2025 Science and ICT Day Ceremony. Professor Lee's impactful contributions and ongoing leadership in the field are demonstrated by his h-index of 41 as of August 2026.
